What's St.Patrick's Day ParadeSt. Patrick's Day is Ireland's greatest holyday.
St. Patrick (389?-461?) is Ireland's Patron Saint. He is said to have first brought Christianity to Ireland.
Now 17th March, St. Patrick's Day, is celebrated not only inside Europe, but also all over the world, by Irish immigrants, their descendants and other Ireland fans.
Also, St. Patrick's Day Parades are held over the world throughout March.
They aim generally for introducing Irish culture, or cultural exchange, and having fun, rather than something religeous.
The first parade started in New York amongst the immigrants.
They often wear green, which is Ireland's symbol colour, and motif of shamrock, Ireland's symbol, etc at the parades. Traditional Irish music and dance are also popular at the scene.
Now that Ireland and St. Patrick’s Day are getting more and more popular in Japan, many cities have the parades all through March.
The biggest and oldest St. Patrick's Day Parade in Japan is the one held in Harajuku, Tokyo, since 1991.
(See http://www.inj.or.jp/ for more.)
We also have the parade here in Tsukuba since 2008.
You can just join us walking in the parade, as individuals/families or as any groups/association. Irish music still more welcome. Or you can also join us as a volunteer staff to help us.
Please see the top page for 2009 Tsukuba Parade information.
